Principal's Foreword (Jan 2021)

At Yusof Ishak Secondary School, the Centre for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE@YISS), our mission of nurturing Curiosity, Creativity and Confidence in Yusoffians to be Life-long Learners who contribute to the Greater Good, is the mainstay of our student-centric, values-driven education. As an institution that promotes the joy of learning through the provision of a holistic curriculum and cutting-edge pedagogies, we seek to develop future-ready Yusoffians as Leaders for Tomorrow. This year, our students can look forward to a myriad of interesting customised programmes such as STEM-related enrichment programmes, design thinking, urban farming, exploratory learning journeys, sports enrichment and arts programme.

Our Applied Learning Programme, YI STEM Experiences (STEMx), adopts an integrative approach in providing a wide range of opportunities for Yusoffians to embrace and engage in STEM learning. They gain exposure to STEM through school-wide activities including urban farming and appreciating aeronautics through a hands-on workshop. Yusoffians also deepen their critical thinking skills through their participation in STEM-related curricula activities planned in collaboration with experts from the relevant fields, and in STEM-related competitions. STEMx provides a conducive environment for Yusoffians to immerse in and be empowered to make meaningful contributions to STEM-related areas in the future.

Our Learn for Life programme is the Creative Leadership Programme. Through the introduction of creative leadership and creative problem solving principles, the school exposes students to multi-cultural arts experiences to develop creative leadership skills in them. This programme also provides a platform to imbue in students a greater appreciation of Arts as they deepen their critical and inventive thinking skills.

Through these and other programmes, we equip our students with competencies and sound values to prepare them for an ever-changing future, where they will shine as Scholars, Sportsmen and Statesmen.

We begin the year with good news as Singapore has made progress on the control of the COVID-19 pandemic and entered into phase 3 of re-opening. As our school continues to provide plentiful opportunities for students to engage in meaningful learning activities, we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and adhere with safe management measures. We will remind our staff and students to observe good personal hygiene at school and home. We would also like to seek your support by bringing your child/ward for medical attention promptly if he/she is not feeling well. Together, we can keep our staff and students safe and move forward together!

In our endeavours, we are grateful for the strong support from parents, School Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Parent Support Group (YI Blossom). This strong support from our key stakeholders, coupled with our competent, committed and caring teachers imbued in our students the joy of learning and contributed to the provision of a quality holistic school experience. We saw many meaningful achievements in terms of academic areas, CCA and opportunities for students’ growth and development.

To prospective parents, I invite you and your children to join us at our e-Open House in the later part of the year. Further information of our school programmes and e-Open House will be made available on our school website.

We look forward to welcoming you to Yusof Ishak Secondary School, the First President School!

Take care and keep well!
